Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

Reboot is about Wren and other teens/young adults, who contract a virus that causes an enhanced reanimation in people after it kills their bodies. Basically they are zombies, but not “The Walking Dead” kind we are use too. Wren and the others are faster, stronger and basically super humans. I honestly hadn’t thought of them as zombies until I was trying to figure out the genre once I finished the book. Wren is notorious among humans and Reboots for being #178, meaning that’s how long she was dead before she rebooted. It is thought that the longer you are dead the less human you are when you return. Wren struggles with this throughout the book but I felt never felt like she wasn’t human.

Wren’s world is a government controlled war zone where most humans have very little and the government is using the Reboots to keep control. Control over the humans and control over the Reboots. Wren has never questioned the status quo until Callum shows up with nothing but questions.
I enjoyed the way Wren and Callum where played off of one another, with Callum being a mere 22 and Wren being THE 178, they are very much opposites and it works for them.  I love that throughout the story we got to watch both Wren and Callum learn and grow. Both doing things they never imagined they would do.

The world of Reboot seems extremely realistic, using places most of us are at least vaguely familiar with and turning them into a whole new world full of characters I felt acted more like super heroes than zombies.

If you are into the normal post-apocalyptic survival stories with all the fear and death that normally surround zombies you would be better off not thinking of this book as a “zombie novel”. IF you are into a kick-butt heroin, who just happens to have died for 178 minutes, with an amazing story and a super cute miss-fit you can’t help but love, THIS is the story for you!

True to series form, Reboot ends on a dramatic cliff- hanger that leaves you going “What now?!!” You will be happy to know that it’s only a 2 book series. Rebel, due for release in May 2014, wraps up Wren and Callum’s story and I am on pins and needles waiting to find out what is going to happen!!

I’m giving Reboot 4/5 cups of steaming, fully caffeinated happiness! I'm giving it only 4 cups because, although I really loved the story, there where definitely lulls that I had to force myself through, which could have everything to do with my ADD brain and nothing to do with the writing, but I just didn't find this as one of those so-awesome-I-can't-put-it-down sort of reads. It's still a pretty great read!
Hi! I’m Amy Tintera, and I write novels for young adults. I grew up in Austin, Texas and graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in journalism. After receiving a masters in film at Emerson College I moved to Los Angeles, where I promptly discovered I didn’t enjoy working in the film industry, and went back to my first love, writing.
My debut, REBOOT, is out now from HarperCollins/HarperTeen, with the sequel to follow in 2014. Film rights have been optioned by Fox 2000.
